Enduring mysteries of city’s ‘Wonderland’

I READ with interest your report of the Midland Drapery in Bygones (“Just imagine the outcry today if anyone suggested razing a city gem

such as Midland Drapery”, September 13).

No mention was made of “Wonderland”. This was a treat at Christmas: mum would take me down some stairs to buy a ticket where we boarded a ship which was to take us on a journey to an exotic land; the ship would rock and roll about, fish swimming past, so exciting! But why did we arrive in the Hardware Department? That was a mystery to me as a child.
