Ex-Red Brody delivers Cup knockout blow

-

ALFRETON Town crashed out of the FA Cup, losing 1-0 away against Cleethorpes Town in the second qualifying round, the first time in 18 years the Reds have lost to a team two divisions below.

And it was former Alfreton striker Brody Robertson who did the damage, scoring a 50th-minute winner for the Northern Premier League Division One East side.

Alfreton managed only one shot on target and can try to get back on their feet tomorrow night when they return to National League North action with a home game against Leamington.

Mickleover fell to a 3-1 defeat in their second qualifying round home clash against fellow NPL Premier Division side Basford United.

Former Derby County winger Lee Holmes was a half-time substitute for Mickleover with the score at 1-1, Ben Lewin putting the home side ahead before Rev James levelled in the 37th minute. But Holmes finished on the losing side as Kane Richards struck in the 82nd minute before James grabbed his second.

Belper Town are also out of the FA Cup, losing 5-0 against Tamworth at the Raygar Stadium.

The Nailers had a great chance to open the scoring in the 16th minute when they were awarded a penalty.

However, Jonathan Margetts’ spot kick was kept out by Tamworth keeper Jas Singh, saving with his legs.

Mikey Taylor then gave Tamworth a 24th-minute lead and Dexter Walters made it 2-0 before the break with a penalty.

Ten minutes into the second half it was 3-0 when Walters cut inside to score his second and Taylor then completed his brace in the 60th minute.

Michael Tait completed the scoring for Tamworth nine minutes from the end and the Nailers turn their attention to a NPL Midlands Division home game against Carlton Town tomorrow night.

Long Eaton United are through to the next round after a 3-1 away win against Bedworth United.

In the NPL Premier, goals either side of half-time by Joe Kenton and Tom Tonks condemned Matlock Town to a 2-0 away defeat against Stafford Rangers, while in the NPL Midlands, Ilkeston Town drew 1-1 away against Carlton Town.

Danny Munday scored a second-half hat-trick as Gresley Rovers continued their strong start to the United Counties Premier Division North season with a 5-1 away win against Melton Town, Steve Hart adding a brace.
