‘Worst thief’ left own motorbike at crime scene

-

A SUSPECTED thief has been branded the “worst in Derbyshire” by police after he left key evidence at a crime scene.

Officers from Derbyshire police were put on alert to try and find a van which had been stolen in Belper.

While searching the scene of the crime, it became apparent that while the suspect had made off with the van, they had left a vital piece of evidence.

Officers could not believe their luck when they realised the suspect had contrived to leave his own motorbike at the scene of the crime.

His decision to make his escape in the stolen van did not pay dividends, as it was soon pulled over by officers from Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit in Matlock on Saturday.

The man behind the wheel was quickly arrested, with police mocking his lack of criminal skills by branding him “the worst thief in Derbyshire”.

The van was returned to its owner.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said: “Matlock. Van stolen from Belper by the worst thief in Derbyshire. The suspect had left his own motorbike at the scene as he made a getaway in the stolen van. Male arrested and vehicle recovered.”
