Dan clinches Top player title on last day
SANDIACRE Town’s Dan Wheeldon is the Derbyshire Premier Division Player of the Year.
Wheeldon needed a single point from his team’s last match on Saturday, and got two, as he scored 19 and took a miserly 1-19 from 10 overs in a win that clinched the title for Sandiacre.
That left Ticknall’s Paul Borrington in second place – and he was joined there by Josh Lacey of Ocbrook & Borrowash, who took the man of the match honours and three points from the umpires in his team’s last day win.
It has been an outstanding season for spinning all-rounder Lacey, who was playing cricket almost before he could walk as the son of former Derbyshire, Chesterfield and Langley Mill all-rounder Simon Lacey.
Throughout the season, umpires at each game have awarded three, two and one points to players deemed most influential, with a £250 first prize for the overall winner, £100 for second and £50 for third in the Finance Advice Centre-sponsored competition.
The usual practice in the event of a tie at the top is for the relevant prizes to be split between the players tying and, if the league decides that is the case, Borrington and Lacey will split the combined second and third money.
