Days when players mixed with the fans

-

I TOTALLY agree with Lee Knowles (“Story shows the gulf between players and fans, Letters September 20”) and certainly not for the better.

Like Lee, I lived a stone’s throw from the Baseball ground (just over Elton Road bridge ) and remember the excitement when I was young as all the buses bringing the fans parked in our street.

Players, as Lee said, were often seen in local pubs – Kevin Hector was often in the Falstaff, one of the pubs I frequented in those days, escorted usually by George Hallam, and I remember Bill Curry coming into the OPTA club on Elton Road.

I remember the match Lee mentioned well because apart from what was I believe the biggest attendance of the season it was a notable victory as Liverpool were champions that season (1961 ). I believe, sadly DCFC finished well down the league but as we did not know then better things were not far away in the shape of the great Brian Clough – happy days.
