Imperial talk deflects from weighty matters

-

APPARENTLY the Government is considering reintroducing Imperial measurements. Well why not? Here are a few reasons why not:

It’s nearly 50 years since we used imperial measures (bar the odd anomaly) and a whole generation have grown up without them.

The standard measures used to calibrate and verify the accuracy of weights have long been retired and there would be a significant cost of replacing them, the only countries in the world still using Imperial measure are the US and Myanmar (the US system is slightly different).

The international scientific community will continue to use the metric system exclusively.

An entirely unnecessary addition to the primary school curriculum will be required.

Since the metric system has been legal in the UK since 1875 and assuming the Government doesn’t repeal this law and renege on the International Organisation of Legal Metrology Agreement it signed in 1875, which committed the signatory nations to move towards a single system of measurement.

It will be necessary for shopkeepers and other vendors to be run dual systems of measurement and allow customers to choose which they prefer.

It, self evidently, isn’t going to happen. This is yet another populist smoke and mirrors ploy by a Government whose popularity is on the wane, to deflect attention away from; pending tax rises, potential food shortages, an ever deteriorating relationship with our biggest and closest trading partner (EU), a health and social care system which is on its knees.
