Gulliver’s theme park among the winners in UK awards

- By BEN REID ben.reid@reachplc.com

THEY are loved by many (and hated by a few), but now the British public have voted for their favourite theme parks and rides.

One of the biggest winners in the UK Theme Park Awards 2021 was Staffordshire’s Alton Towers with 15 gongs. Derbyshire also made the list, with Matlock Bath’s Gulliver’s Kingdom being named among the best small theme parks for families.

It shared the gold in that category with Gulliver’s World in Warrington and Gulliver’s Valley in Sheffield (Gulliver’s Theme Parks). There were 21 categories at the awards, with the 175,000-plus votes cast combined with the judges’ scores.

Gulliver’s Kingdom is a loosely Wild West theme park with rides for all the family including a hair-raising log flume. It enjoys a beautiful setting tucked away on the edge of the Peak District National Park.

Short-break packages are available at Gulliver’s Matlock Bath to stay in a themed family suite.

If booked online in advance, tickets for adults and children are £17 and free for those under 90cm.

Alton Towers has a new Gangsta Granny ride based on David Walliams’ hit children’s book. It’s the new biggie at the theme park, which already boasts headliners such as Nemesis, Oblivion and Wicker Man.

You’ll feel yourself stepping into a real-life children’s novel with cartoony streets, colourful actors dressed as Queen’s guards straight out of the book, and a host of recognisable sights for Walliams fans, such as Raj’s Shop.
