A TV producer from Derby has been awarded a prestigious Emmy Award for the Apple TV comedy series Ted Lasso.

Tina Pawlik who went to school at St Benedict Catholic Academy, in Duffield Road, between 1989 and 1995, and is originally from Chaddesden.

The Emmy Awards are the television of the Oscars and are highly prestigious.

Ted Lasso, co-created by and starring Jason Sudeikis, secured seven awards in total at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 19.

The hit show revolves around an American football coach who is brought to the UK to save a failing football team, AFC Richmond.

Tina described the show as “a fish out of water story”.

She said: “Ted is expected to do a terrible job but then through his personality and his focus on the team, he ends up taking them to

sort of semi-success.”

Ted Lasso was created by Jason Sudeikis (who plays Ted Lasso), Brendan Hunt (who plays Ted’s assistant, Coach Beard), and Bill Lawrence who is best known for creating the American sitcom, Scrubs.

The show is an amalgamation of American and British humour combining the American sitcom format with a British setting and actors.

Tina explained her role: “I was the UK side of it. They got in touch with me through Warner Brothers and I put the show together for them on this side of the pond.

“It definitely joins America and the UK. It sort of meets in the middle with its style and also something that is really lovely about it, and it is touched up on in the story itself, its about those differences.

“You’ve got scenes where Coach Beard is coaching Ted and they are trying to learn the rules of football as they are traveling over to the UK to coach this team.

“And that was kind of how we worked with the American team anyway because there are these really kind of subtle differences in language and the approach to film making so it was nice that what was happening on screen, was what was happening on screen as well.”

Tina Pawlik has also worked on some of the UK’s biggest TV hits in the last few years, including BBC’s The Bodyguard and Netflix’s Top Boy, and got her first break in the

TV and film industry on the set of Control, a biopic of Joy Division’s lead singer, Ian Curtis, which was partly filmed in Nottingham.

Tina confirmed that she is currently working on the fourth season of Top Boy and that Ted Lasso will be returning for its third season.

St Benedict’s headteacher, Kevin Gritton said: “Congratulations to Tina from everyone at Saint Benedict. We are all incredibly proud of her and she is a shining example of what can be achieved. I’m sure our current students will be inspired by her success.”
