Major road closed while emergency services tackle house blaze
PART of a major road in Chesterfield was closed off while emergency services dealt with a house fire.
A section of Newbold Road, between the junction with Littlemoor and the junction with Highfield Lane, was closed by Derbyshire police yesterday morning.
Pictures from the scene show a number of fire engines outside a row of terrace houses and takeaway shops along with a police cars.
Firefighters can also be seen entering the property wearing breathing equipment.
Eyewitnesses told the Derby Telegraph they saw members of the fire service “drinking water after coming out of the house and their face was black from the fire and smoke”.
In a statement, a police spokesman said: “The force was called by the Derbyshire Fire and
Rescue Service to reports of a fire at a house in Newbold Road at around 8.55am.
“Fire crews are currently on-site and officers are assisting with road closures. Drivers should avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.”
Newbold Safer Neighbourhood Team posted on its Facebook page about the incident: “Newbold Road is currently closed off between the mini roundabout at the Co-op and the mini roundabout near the Tesco petrol station due to an ongoing incident.
“Please find an alternative route and expect delays in the area.”
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service issued an update about the incident.
A spokesperson said: “At 8.52am this morning, September 27, Firefighters from Chesterfield, Staveley, Dronfield and Nottinghamshire’s Mansfield Fire Station responded to a house fire on Newbold Road, Chesterfield.
“Firefighters used four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to tackle the fire.”
The fire broke out in a row of terrace houses in Newbold Road,
there are also a number of takeaway shops on the same side of the road and houses on the opposite side.
A spokesperson for Derbyshire police later said: “The fire was caused by an electrical fault.
“Also found at the house was a cannabis grow which officers are making further enquiries into.
“The road reopened at 1.55pm.”
