KELLE Roos’ red card in the defeat by Sheffield United has opened the door for Ryan Allsop – and to a possible return to the Derby County squad for David Marshall.

Allsop joined the Rams as a free agent in the summer and the 29-year-old has been number two behind Roos.

Roos has started the nine League games this season, while Allsop has lined up in the Carabao Cup ties against Salford City and Sheffield United.

Allsop came off the bench after 58 minutes at Bramall Lane on Saturday following the dismissal of Roos for bringing down United striker Billy Sharp.

“I haven’t seen it back but from my view it looked a red card,” Rams manager Wayne Rooney said after the game, before adding: “It’s a big opportunity for Ryan (Allsop) to come in for the game on Wednesday.”

Derby face Reading at Pride Park Stadium tomorrow and Allsop is set to make his first appearance in the Championship since February. His last was for Wycombe Wanderers against Derby.

Marshall has not featured in a first-team squad all season.

The 36-year-old Scotland international’s last game for Derby was in a 3-0 defeat by Preston North End at

Deepdale in April.

Speculation surrounded the experienced keeper’s future with the Rams during the summer transfer window and he was linked with Liverpool, among others.

Rooney has been asked on a number of occasions this season about the decision to have Marshall as third choice.

“I understand it is a very frustrating time for him, I get that, but we have three very good goalkeepers at the club and, obviously, I have to make a decision on who plays and on who is the second goalkeeper,” he said last month.

“That’s clear from the decision I have made from the team selections but Marshy is a very good keeper and someone I would not be afraid to put in or put on the bench.”

Marshall joined Derby on a free from Wigan Athletic in August 2020, ruling out speculation that suggested he was not in the team because another appearance would spark a transfer instalment being paid to Wigan.
