A SERIOUS crash saw a major road in South Derbyshire closed for a number of hours yesterday.

Egginton Road in Etwall was sealed off in both directions to allow the emergency services to attend to the incident, which is understood to have involved at least one vehicle.

It was also suggested a pedestrian was caught up in the incident.

Two air ambulances joined a number of land ambulances at the scene. There was also a heavy police presence.

Paramedics were seen treating a patient in the road.

The accident, which was reported at 1.50pm, took place close to the primary school, Etwall Vets and Egginton Road’s junction with Main Street and Hilton Road.

Neighbours reported seeing the air ambulances land in nearby fields.

The condition of the injured party was not known at the time the Derby Telegraph went to press.

Eye witnesses claimed the accident involved a pedestrian but this has not yet been confirmed by the emergency services.

A statement from Derbyshire police said: “Eggington Road at Etwall is currently closed, and will be closed for some time due to a serious collision.

“Please avoid the area and find alternative routes.”

The road closure resulted in congestion on local routes, with traffic service Inrix reporting delays and slow traffic for motorists.
