No plans to remove security fence at beauty spot

A GIANT fence put up around the edge of a popular Derbyshire beauty spot is to remain in place for the foreseeable future.

The 850-metre long metal barrier was installed at Foremark Reservoir, near Repton, as a last resort after a raft of anti-social behaviour issues over the summer.

Police were called to the Severn Trent Water-owned site on multiple occasions over the past few months to deal with appalling behaviour from members of the public.

When hot weather hit the area, people were often found swimming in the reservoir, which has dangerous underwater currents.

There were so many issues that rangers regularly had to call police to help them clear people out and shut the attraction due to safety fears.

It included a major search operation involving the police helicopter when a drunk man went for a dip in the water.

Worried bystanders called police when he did not remerge. It is believed he got out safely.

A man once defecated in front of one of the security guards and many people continued to ignore warning signs asking them not to go into the water.

The 6ft high fence was then installed to prevent people accessing the waters from the shoreline, which includes a sandy beach.

Severn Trent Water has now confirmed the fence will remain in place for the foreseeable future. A spokesperson said: “The temporary fencing around a section of Foremark Reservoir is set to remain in place while we consider a more permanent solution.”

The dangerous water is very cold,

deep and algae-infested, and contains many unseen obstacles.

Gangs of young people have previously broken through the metal fences, damaging security fittings to hold a party on the beach area, said police.
