Autumn truly here as Storm Arwen arrives

-

A WET and windy weekend is likely to see the Met Office naming its first storm of the season.

The low-pressure system, currently set to bring 50mph gusts, is predicted to arrive through Saturday afternoon and it currently looks potent enough to be named “Storm Arwen”.

The Met Office compiles a list of alphabetised names – suggested by members of the public – every summer and starts naming storms from September when the storm season usually gets underway.

And, with early predictions for Saturday’s storm hinting at peak gust speeds of up to 70mph in some parts of the country, it is possible its impact could warrant an amber warning which means a potential risk to life while red warnings suggest dangerous weather is expected.

If “Storm Arwen” does make an appearance this weekend, it will round off what has become a fairly grotty week for Derbyshire, with noticeably colder temperatures, blustery winds and some long, heavy showers.

Showers are set to creep back in today and tomorrow but they are likely to be less sustained than they were on Tuesday.

Saturday should start off fairly well, but feeling cool and with winds increasing - and the wind and rain currently looks set to arrive throughout the afternoon building up to some pretty stormy conditions overnight.

The effects of this storm could linger through Sunday but there are early hints conditions may calm down through the start of next week - potentially even becoming warm and sunny as we move towards the weekend.
