Suspect in van ‘had no place to hide’

-

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of domestic stalking after his van was recognised by an electronic police database system.

The man had been flagged as wanted by Derbyshire police and was subsequently “pinged” by the force’s real-time automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) system.

The suspect, who was driving a white Renault flatbed van, was then detained.

On twitter, the Derbyshire Road Crime Unit said: “No place to hide today, especially in a vehicle of this size.”

ANPR technology is used to detect, deter and disrupt criminality at a local, force, regional and national level, the NPCC says. Some ANPR cameras are free-standing, while others are mounted in police vehicles.

When a vehicle passes the camera, their registration number is read and instantly checked against database records of vehicles of interest.

In turn, this may give the police adequate reason to stop the vehicle, check it for evidence and, where necessary, make arrests.
