DAMAGE has been discovered at a Derbyshire dam as heavy rain is expected for the county.

A statement issued yesterday by the county council said: “Precautionary work on the small dam at the south end of Shipley Lake is taking place today and over the weekend.

“Regular inspections of the dam by Derbyshire County Council have revealed some damage around one metre below the water line which needs to be repaired.

“Heavy rain is expected on Saturday and, as a precaution, water is being removed from the dam to lower the water level.”

The lake is in the Shipley Country Park, a former mining area, which was opened in 1976.

Police and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service are supporting the work and the Nutbrook trail path, which runs past the Nutbrook café, has been closed. The café has also been advised to close as a temporary measure.

A county council spokesperson said: “With the heavy rain expected

over the weekend and the damage that has been discovered in the Shipley Lake dam we have decided to lower the water level and close the nearby path temporarily. Residents are asked not to use the path and to stay clear of the dam and

pumping equipment whilst the work is carried out.”

In 2019, the county council was heavily involved in averting a major disaster when the Toddbrook dam near Whaley Bridge began crumbling.
