1 THE TRUTH Tonight, BBC4, 9pm
Fabienne Dangeville (Catherine
Deneuve), grand dame of French cinema, is poised to release a memoir entitled The Truth. While promoting the book, she plays host to her screenwriter daughter Lumir (Juliette Binoche) and her actor husband Hank (Ethan Hawke). As Lumir reads her mother’s book, she is staggered by the extent of Fabienne’s deception, trotting out rose-tinted anecdotes that never happened to polish her public image. The divide between reality and fiction forces the two women to address their differences and seek common ground.
2 IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK Tomorrow, BBC2, 9.45pm
This sublime adaptation of the novel by James Baldwin charts a love story between best friends Tish Rivers (KiKi Layne) and Fonny Hunt (Stephan James, pictured with Layne) against a turbulent backdrop of racial injustice in 1970s Harlem. When Fonny is accused of raping another woman, a pregnant Tish vows to prove her man’s innocence.
3 CATCH ME IF YOU CAN Monday, Film4, 9pm
This funny and stylish romp is based on the true story of Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio, left) who as a teen swindled the US government out of thousands of dollars by affecting a series of disguises: as an airline pilot, doctor, international playboy, and even the assistant attorney general. Tom Hanks plays the FBI agent on his trail.
4 REBECCA Tuesday, Talking Pictures TV, 9pm
Joan Fontaine is the timid new wife of widower Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier) in this drama directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Maxim’s estate remains in the grip of housekeeper Ms Danvers (Judith Anderson, left with Fontaine) and the memory of his late wife, Rebecca. Mrs Danvers exploits the insecurities of her new mistress.
5 SELMA Wednesday, BBC2, 11.15pm
In 1960s America, African-Americans are denied the chance to vote in the election in which President Lyndon B Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) hopes to be re-elected. Martin Luther King Jr (David Oyelowo, left) entreats the President to right this democratic wrong and heads to Selma, Alabama, to lead a peaceful protest march.
6 CASINO ROYALE Thursday, ITV4, 9pm
Daniel Craig can currently be seen in his James Bond swan song No Time to Die, but here’s a chance to see his debut. This time, the secret agent, left, is on the trail of Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), an international criminal planning to use a high-stakes poker game as a means of funding terrorist organisations across the world.
7 SLIDING DOORS Friday, BBC1, 11.25pm
In this drama, Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow, left) has just been fired. The plot splits into two strands – in one she catches the train home and arrives to find her boyfriend in bed with his ex, while in the other she doesn’t, and carries on unaware of his infidelity. The event sends her life in two very different directions, but she can’t escape destiny.
