Police shock at wrong-way driver
OFFICERS HORRIFIED TO SEE DANGEROUS A38 MANOEUVRE WITH CHILD IN CAR
POLICE said they were “gobsmacked” when they saw a motorist reversing the wrong way up an A38 slip road with a child in the back of the car.
Officers from Melbourne Police Safer Neighbourhood Team in a marked car on the “triple-carriageway” Toyota roundabout were “horrified” when they spotted a car driving up a sliproad leading to the A38 northbound into oncoming traffic.
When the driver stopped in Findern, the officers said their “blood ran cold” when they say they saw a child “in the back of the car”.
Police took to Facebook to warn that action will be taken against motorists who conduct themselves in “such a reckless manner”.
The post reads: “A red-faced man has been dealt with at the roadside after he was seen reversing the wrong way up one of Derbyshire’s most dangerous junctions.
“Your Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) were travelling in a marked police car on the triple-carriageway Toyota roundabout to a community engagement event when they were horrified to observe a car travelling up a sliproad leading to the A38 northbound into oncoming traffic.
“Officers were gobsmacked to see the vehicle heading towards their car in what is commonly known as Derbyshire’s spaghetti junction.”
They said the driver had several near misses with other vehicles as he attempted his “outrageous manoeuvre”.
“The motorist finally came to a stop in Doles Lane, Findern. The officers’ blood ran cold when they noticed a very young child in the back of the vehicle. “With no regard for the safety of his passengers and other road users the male was asked: ‘What were you thinking?’ His response astonished officers when he stated it was: ‘a moment of madness.’
“He also admitted that in his rush to fill his car with petrol he had also failed to notice that his fuel cap was still open.”
Police said the driver “admitted that he had not seen that his vehicle had sustained a dint to the car’s front bumper”.
In the post on Facebook, Sergeant Nizzer, of South Derbyshire’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Drivers are now being warned that it is never appropriate to reverse up a carriageway into oncoming traffic in any circumstances.”
