The return of Remembrance

- By RACHEL SUTHERLAND rachel.sutherland@reachplc.com

DERBY’S annual Remembrance Sunday service and parade will be returning to the city centre next month after the Covid pandemic caused their cancellation last year.

The city council has published information for the event, which will take place on Sunday, November 14, in Corporation Street, with wreaths being laid at the war memorial in the Market Place.

The service will be led by the Very Revd Dr Peter Robinson, Dean of Derby, during which a two-minute silence will be observed at 11am, after which wreaths will be laid.

There will be designated areas where members of the public are able to view the proceedings, which will begin at 10.50am.

Organisations who wish to lay a wreath must contact the council’s civic services department at mayor@ derby.gov.uk by 5pm on Friday, October 29. Wreaths can be sourced via the Royal British Legion.

On Armistice Day, which is three days earlier on Thursday, November 11, there will also be an opportunity for members of the public to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in service. This will also take place at 10.50am at the Market Place war memorial.

For further information, or to discuss how you can be involved in this year’s commemoration please contact civic services via email or telephone 01332 643066.

A large number of smaller Remembrance Sunday events look set to be held across Derbyshire on November 14, including at Holymoorside, where a service will be taking place between 11am and 12 noon outside the village hall at the war memorial.

And there will also be a Remembrance Sunday event outside the Spanker Inn, in Belper, where people are invited to gather from 10.30am for a two minutes’ silence at 11am.

Parish councils across the county are also being encouraged to put up large size poppies on lampposts once again. Despite last year’s problems, 36 parish councils took part and in the process raised £4,233 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal by purchasing the poppies. Anyone thinking of doing this should check with the local highways teams on the regulations for putting them on lamp posts.

If you are organising a Remembrance event, let our newsdesk know and we will add it to the list we will compile in the next few weeks. Email newsdesk@derbytelegraph.co.uk.
