Knife Angel returns to the county

-

FOR the whole of the month of October the spectacular Knife Angel will be calling Chesterfield home, the largest town in the UK to host the statue.

The 27ft tall sculpture arrived in the town on Monday and was erected in Rykneld Square in the shadow of the famous Crooked Spire church.

A giant crane was drafted in to lift the huge artwork from the back of a lorry.

It is the second time the sculpture, made of 100,000 blades, has been on display in Derbyshire. In October 2019, the Knife Angel was positioned outside Derby Cathedral and was visited by more than 100,000 people.

The statue, which has spent the past month on display in Chelmsford, has been made by the British Ironwork Centre and has been touring the country to educate people about the effects of knife crime.

The Mayor of Chesterfield, Councillor Glenys Falconer, said: “I’m really pleased that the Knife Angel is coming to Chesterfield. I really hope it inspires people not to carry knives. This is a wonderful work of art and it is hard to believe that so many knives have been used to create it.

“I am sure a lot of people will be talking about it and there will be a lot of admiration to have it in the town.”

Once the Knife Angel has completed its stay in Chesterfield, the statue will move to Blackburn, where it will stand outside Blackburn Cathedral for the month of November.
