JOBS TO DO THIS WEEK

-

■ While the weather is warm, weeds are still in growth so try to get on top of weeding before inclement weather arrives – you’ll be glad you did in spring!

■ Is your veg patch bare? Consider planting a green manure such as clover or winter bean which will put some goodness back into the soil and elbow out weeds trying to colonise it.

■ Messy looking perennials that have finished flowering can be cut back but leave ones with ornamental looking seed heads to overwinter.

■ October may be the final cut for your lawn. Apply an autumn fertiliser afterwards.

■ Tender plants like salvias need to be dug up, potted and put in a frost-free conservatory or similar place for the winter. Cover the crowns of tender plants that you are leaving outside with a thick dry mulch.

■ Make sure to get some bulbs in the ground now for a gorgeous spring display of daffodils.

■ Plant autumn garlic bulbs and autumn onion sets.
