City venues with food hygiene score of just zero or one star
INSPECTORS SAID SEVERAL PREMISES NEEDED TO MAKE SERIOUS IMPROVEMENT
THE latest hygiene scores reveal that Derby has 27 food outlets with either a zero or one-star rating.
Last week, we revealed that only six establishments across the whole county had zero-star food hygiene ratings, meaning urgent improvements are necessary and could even see them close if changes are not made.
Ratings from the Food Standards Agency reveal that three of the zerostar-rated outlets are in Derby, which is also home to 24 one-star outlets.
One star means major improvement is necessary, with any outlet with a score of three stars or higher being generally compliant with food hygiene regulations.
The outlets with zero-star ratings are:
Frites33, St Peter’s Street
New Desi Dera, Normanton Road Pear Tree Community Shop, Pear Tree Road
All three have been inspected since March 1, 2021.
There are two food outlets with new one-star ratings, with St Thomas Shop in St Thomas Road and Greedy Pig Butcher in Park Farm in Allestree returning one-star scores on August 17 and July 27 respectively.
The Greedy Pig Butcher was told that major improvement was necessary in management of food safety, which covers processes ensuring food is safe to eat and staff are briefed on food safety protocols, when it was inspected.
But its owner, Latimer Higham,
said a fridge issue was to blame which took place while both he and the manager were on holiday, which caused delays in getting the problem fixed. He said: “For the last 12 years of me owning that company it has always been four stars.
“The week prior [to the inspection], we had a major fridge breakdown, our compressor went. So, I phoned up the fridge engineer, but the issue was that there was a 35-day waiting list for a compressor.
“That was out of the question, so I had to transfer all the stock that I’d got over to my other shop at Repton, and then I had to cancel all my orders coming into the shop until we got the fridge running.
“When [the manager] came back [from holiday], on Monday, some of the stock was transferred back from Repton to the Allestree shop.
“Environmental Health turned upon the Tuesday, and there was one basket of meat in the fridge that should have been thrown away, which was obviously out of date, so [the manager] said ‘we’ll throw it away now.’
“There was no issue whatsoever with our paperwork and cleanliness of the shop.”
Two establishments have also been removed from the one-star list since last August.
Spice Hut in London Road went from having one star in August to receiving a five-star review on September 14.
Food Spot, in Upper Dale Road, is no longer visible on the Food Standard Agency’s ratings search tool.

All food hygiene scores were correct as of Monday, October 4.
After a business is inspected, the council has 14 days to inform operators of the scoring decision.
The business then has 21 days to appeal against that decision and only after this can we at the Derby Telegraph submit a Freedom of Information request, which can take up to 20 working days to be provided.
Once we receive the information, we again contact the business in question for comment to see what action it has taken before publishing the findings of the report.
