Things could have been so different for Rams

-

IN his article “How Lampard’s signings led to problems after play-off defeat” (October 11) Richard Cusack was right in saying the Rams have been in a downward spiral since the defeat to Aston Villa in the 2019 play-off final.

But I’m sure, as the Rams fans swarmed to Wembley on that day, many were well aware that the match was make or break in so many ways, which made the exclusion of Jack Marriott from the starting line-up all the more disappointing.

I know Richard rated the Marriottt signing as a “miss”. I also know Marriott failed to impress more than one Rams manager, plus that of relegated Sheffield Wednesday. Clearly there was a problem, but I don’t care.

Only a few days earlier, Jack Marriott had triggered arguably the greatest comeback in the club’s history, sealed when he poked-in a late winner with the Leeds defence split wide open. I was delirious.

I know football is all about opinions, but from my perspective the only fans at Wembley who were glad to see Jack Marriott glued to the subs’ bench for so long, were those bedecked in claret and blue as their team took a 2-0 lead.

One thing is for sure; victory on that day would have put the club in a totally different situation to the present one. It really was make or break.
