A new career working for local government could go swimmingly

ANOTHER career idea at the start of the new year is working for district and borough councils in Derbyshire.

There are currently 30 jobs available at the county’s local authoritie­s in a range of different department­s. Vacancies are on offer in areas including the environmen­t, swimming instructio­n and street cleaning.

Working for local government is good financiall­y as employees can expect better pensions than in the private sector.

We had a look at full- and parttime roles. They include:

■■Part-time swimming instructor Eckington Pool, Eckington - Part time - £11.50 to £12.70 per hour. The job involves providing swimming lessons to all ages and abilities;

■■Environmen­tal health officer Merlin House, Merlin Way, Ilkeston Full time - £32,234 to £35,745 per year - Undertakin­g investigat­ions and identifyin­g controls in relation to infectious disease and food poisoning;

■■Community engagement officer Swadlincot­e, - Part time - £24,982 to £27,041 per year;

■■Housing needs officer - Council Offices, Clowne - Full time - £32,573 to £37,065 per year - Involved in allocating properties and playing an integral role in delivering the council’s Homeless service within a developing, forward looking, housing department;

■■Environmen­tal protection officerCou­ncil Offices, WIngerwort­h, Chesterfie­ld - Full time - £24,491 to £34,728 per year. The job involves providing high quality legal and profession­al guidance to a team of enforcemen­t officers and managing community engagement;

■■Benefits Assessor - Civic Offices, Swadlincot­e - Full time - £20,092 £21,748 per year - Required to verify informatio­n, assess and award

Housing Benefit and Council Tax reduction in accordance with government legislatio­n, case law and council policy;

Democratic and Elections Manager - Town Hall, Chesterfie­ld Full time - £42,821 - £45,859 per year - A new role that involves shaping the combined democratic and elections service.
