DERBY and Derbsyhire authorities have revealed that the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay will visit the county this summer.

The baton will head through both Derby and Derbyshire Dales in July while on the final stint of its journey in England. Its trip to Derby will see the ceremonial stick visit the new Moorways Sports Village and the Museum of Making.

The baton’s journey through the county will provide the opportunity for communities to experience the excitement for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will feature eleven days of sport. Its bearers will arrive in Derby at 2.35pm and depart at 3.50pm on July 11.

Councillor Robin Wood, Mayor of Derby, said: “I’m thrilled to announce that the Queen’s Baton Relay will be visiting Derby on Monday, July 11. Taking a route through the historic city centre and the fantastic new Moorways Sports Village, the relay will showcase some of the best that Derby has to offer.

“I’d encourage everyone to come along and get involved with what will be a historic day for Derby as we prepare for the Commonwealth Games that are taking place just down the road in Birmingham.”

From June 2, the Baton will spend four days in London, coinciding with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend, before resuming its international journey and return to England on Monday, July 4, to start its 25-day tour of the regions. It will make the journey across the country for 29 days, before arriving at the opening ceremony for Birmingham 2022 on July 28.

Further details on where to line the route in Derby are yet to be released.
