Thousands who have the Bug for classic cars throng town’s streets for festival
THOUSANDS of car fans poured into Swadlincote town centre on Sunday for a look at some classic and unusual cars.
Swadlincote’s Festival of Transport was back with a bang this year, thanks to the great weather, and families were out and about in support of the town as it recovers from the Covid pandemic.
Alongside the large number of cars was children’s entertainment and shows.
Julie Adams was attending the festival with her Mark 1 Ford Fiesta
Bravo made in 1981, and a 1962 Ford Anglia. She said: “We owned a valeting company for 11 years and one of our young lads bought this car [the Fiesta] when he was 18 and kept it for 18 years. He asked us if we wanted it, as he knew we would look after it.
“We came to the transport festival for the first time last year and it has been absolutely amazing today. I think the weather has really helped.”
Motorcycle fan Graham Woods attended the festival with his Vespa PX MK 1. He said: “It is 39 years old and I have had it for 25 years. This is my first time at the festival. I love it.”
Patrick Devaney was at the festival with his Bond Bug. Explaining, he said: “It was made by car firm Bond until it was bought out by Reliant and eventually moved to Tamworth. It was made in 1972. I have it because it is so unusual. I have had it for about 18 years.
“This is my third time at the festival. I go all over the UK to transport festivals. It is a good turnout today.”
Darnill Shae attended the festival with his daughter Anya. He brought along his T2 Volkswagen Campervan and his selection of classic Raleigh bicycles, including several Choppers and a Grifter.
