Can young US chefs stand Gordon’s heat?
YOU can rely on Gordon Ramsay to make a small child cry (and he does), but these kids are steeled for victory in the high-energy cooking contest.
“We’ve brought the best young home cooks from all over America to the MasterChef kitchen and we’re pulling no punches,” says the shouty chef.
He’s not kidding. He tells one kid that their dish is disgusting before blasting another effort: “It looks like it’s been chucked on the floor and dumped back in the bowl.” Ouch.
But he finds time for compliments too in this contest that showcases some astounding skill from talented youngsters.
Gordon tells one junior cook: “I know professional chefs three times older than you who struggle to cook that beautifully.”
The 16 pint-sized chefs have survived a gruelling audition in LA to secure their apron and spot on the show. They’re hoping to win the trophy, along with a $100,000 prize, a new kitchen and bakeware plus a trip to Caesars Palace in Vegas to eat at Gordon’s restaurant.
Judging alongside the Scot are chef Aarón Sánchez and best-selling cookbook author Daphne Oz.
The excitement levels are through the roof, so if you don’t like high-pitched squealing you may want to switch off, but this is so much more fun than the grown-up version.
First they must reach into a mystery box to find an ingredient to showcase in a dish. Then there’s screeching over a slimy eel and octopus, as well as a live lobster and pinching crab.
“This just got real!” yells nine-year-old Tegan. They may be small but they are fierce…
