A CAR meet in Derby attended by more than 50 vehicles was broken up by police, with warnings for the drivers.

The gathering, at Pride Park last Friday night, was dispersed by police after they received reports of the event. Officers said a number of cars tried to leave the scene, with one driving the wrong way round a roundabout, almost colliding with a police car.

Of the 30 vehicles detained, only six drivers were from Derbyshire. Most drivers stopped were warned and dispersed. One was sent a notice of intended prosecution.

An update issued by Chellaston and Shelton Lock Police SNT on Facebook said: “Officers have conducted several patrols at the weekend aimed at disrupting and taking action against the regular car meets that have been occurring on Infinity Park Way and Pride Park. We have conducted similar such patrols each weekend for the last few weeks when we are able to attend dependant on operational requirements.

“On Friday evening we attended a report of 50-plus cars racing on Pride Park. Officers blued it to the location whereupon around 30 vehicles were present on Orient Way.

“Several immediately made off at the sight of marked vehicles, with one driving the wrong way round a roundabout and almost colliding with a marked vehicle, with officers inside, in an attempt to get away.

“We then contained the remainder and took details for insurance purposes and with a view for section 59s and community protection warnings, warned them and dispersed

them. This was done at the time due to not witnessing any racing or antisocial behaviour as described. Traffic units from roads policing also attended the area to assist us.

“Of the 30 vehicles we stopped that evening, only six were from Derby with the rest coming from other counties in the East Midlands, and some from Walsall. None present were known to us from previous meets.

“Work is continuing in conjunction with the council to find a sustainable resolution to this issue with speed reduction measures in place and community protection warnings. The driver mentioned above has been sent a notice of intended prosecution for the offence of driving without due care and attention.”
