Guest and Madsen in Derbyshire fightback

-

WAYNE Madsen defied an injured right hand to lead a Derbyshire fightback with Brooke Guest on the second day of their Vitality County Championship game away to Yorkshire.

An unbroken partnership of 167 on day two, with Madsen on 88 and Guest on 74, saw Derbyshire on 190-3 in response to Yorkshire’s imposing 450-5 declared, in which England men Joe Root and Harry Brook struck fluent centuries.

Yorkshire had declared relatively early, mindful of the weather forecast, and heavy overnight rain which continued into yesterday morning at Headingley soon made any chance of play on the third day remote.

Whether a result could possibly be conjured if it is dry today also looks unlikely.

Madsen’s effort earned praise from Brook, who said: “For Madsen, to come out after snapping or cracking his webbing with stitches in, to bat like he did, you can only respect that.”

Madsen injured his hand trying to take a catch on day one but was determined to play and team-mate Luis Reece said: “It’s Wayne’s bottom hand, his right. There was a lot of blood there. I think he had a day in Leeds General Infirmary.

“He went out and had a hit and was OK. He’s tampered with his gloves, cut the middle out and tied two of the fingers together or something.”

Yorkshire had moved on from 276-3 on the first day, in which Derbyshire had dropped four catches.

Brook went on to 126 not out from 135 balls on day two before the declaration, while Root had been a little more circumspect in making 119 from 190 balls before being bowled by Zak Chappell.

There was a worrying start to Derbyshire’s innings, as Matthew Fisher struck twice in six overs, as he trapped Harry Came leg before for eight and had David Lloyd caught at third slip for a second-ball duck.

Reece followed for 11 and Derbyshire were 23-3 before Guest and Madsen came together.
