A VEHICLE believed to be involved in multiple fly-tipping incidents has been seized and destroyed by a Derbyshire council.

The Vauxhall Insignia was crushed at Arleston Lane, Barrow upon Trent, as South Derbyshire District Council sent out a shocking warning to other potential offenders.

Using legal powers under waste law, the council seized the Vauxhall Insignia which they have compelling evidence has been involved in multiple incidents.

Arleston Lane, where the car was crushed, is a popular area for flytipping in the district, the council has said.

The council says it hopes that the powerful visual message will act as a deterrent to show that fly-tipping will not be tolerated in South Derbyshire and could put your vehicle at risk.

The person who was in possession of the vehicle when it was seized had been given the opportunity to prove that they owned it, and they failed to do so. The council used legal powers to destroy the vehicle and is now using it to illustrate the potential consequences of fly-tipping in South Derbyshire. Matthew Holford, the district council’s head of environmental services said: “Flytipping is a selfish act which causes enormous annoyance for residents, damages the environment and is often driven by greed or laziness and the council have been working hard for many years to prevent it.”

The council says that these efforts and initiatives are “working”, as reported incidents for last year were the lowest in nine years.

A spokesperson for the authority added: “The council is confident that this has been due to the continuation of robust action, such as car seizures taken against suspected offenders and the resulting disruption in the activities of the small number of individuals who seek to make a profit from illegal waste disposal.”

Fly-tipping is a selfish act which causes enormous annoyance for residents.
