FEATURES

The lack of a viewfinder, touch control and RAW file shooting limits the score, but other aspects impress

BUILD QUALITY

It’s a nice-feeling camera small enough to fit in your jacket pocket, yet doesn’t seem unbalanced when the lens is extended

HANDLING

It doesn’t take long to find your way around the control system, the menu isn’t too long and the buttons and dials are responsive

QUALITY OF RESULTS

Best results are achieved in bright light at the wide-angle end of the lens, but it can be frustrating to use the longest point of the lens

VALUE FOR MONEY

With the Panasonic TZ90 costing less yet including a touchscreen, viewfinder and RAW shooting, the SX740 isn’t especially good value

OVERALL

The uprated processing engine gives the SX740 HS advantages over the SX730 HS, but the 40x zoom fails to deliver handheld, so other models are more attractive.
