CAPTURE A MISTY AUTUMN SCENE

Grab your tripod and head to a local woodland area on a misty morning

-

1 ON LOCATION Make sure that you get to your chosen location nice and early so that you have plenty of time to find a suitable spot to shoot from. next, mount your camera on a tripod, attach a wide-angle zoom such as a 16-35mm and fit a lens hood in order to reduce the risk of flare.

2 GET READY TO SHOOT next you will need to set your DsLR to aperture priority (Av) exposure mode, so you choose the aperture to control depth of field and the camera sorts out the exposure. stop the lens down to f8 or f11 then compose your shot and focus using AF.

3 REMOTE TAKE THE SHOT use a release to trip the shutter or set the self-timer to a ten-second delay and press the shutter release – the delay reduces the risk of vibrations causing camera shake. check the preview image and histogram to see how the shot turned out.

4 RE-TAKE THE SHOT The first shot was underexposed due to the bright area in the centre of the frame fooling the camera’s metering system. The problem is easily solved by increasing the exposure by +1 stops using the camera’s exposure compensation facility.

5 SHOOT ALTERNATIVE IMAGES Once you’ve got the first shot spot on, try alternatives by varying your viewpoint, lens focal length and camera format. shoot portrait as well as landscape format, get down low, go wider – but work quickly as the mist will soon burn away.

6 PROCESS IMAGES Download the images and start editing. in Adobe camera Raw (AcR) increase clarity to emphasise the sunbeams and Vibrance to enhance the colours. experiment with colour temperature and use the shadows slider to reveal more detail in the shadows.
