Over recent years a huge range of modifiers have been developed to help improve the quality of the light output from flashguns. One of the best solutions has come from MagMod. These modifiers use a stretchy MagGrip that fits onto a wide range of flashguns. This holds magnets at either end of the flash’s light panel so that modifiers like the MagSphere and MagBounce, which also have magnets built-in, can be attached quickly and easily. It also means that you can stack modifiers like the MagGrid and Creative Gels.

The hardest part of using the MagMod system is stretching the grip over a flashgun, but once that’s done, you can leave it in place. Using magnets means there’s no noisy Velcro to worry about at a wedding. The magnets are also strong enough to prevent the modifiers being knocked off, but it’s still easy to remove them.

This Professional Kit includes a MagGrip, the basis for the whole system, plus a MagGrid, MagSphere and MagBounce along with a set of seven rigid polycarbonate Creative Gels that fit inside the MagGel (also included). In addition, there’s a small drawstring bag to keep everything together.

The MagSphere and MagBounce are made from white silicon, which means they’re soft and can be squashed down for easy transportation. Then, when you need to use them, they just pop into shape. The MagSphere is an omni-directional diffuser which works like a mini softbox, producing attractive light with less harsh highlights and shallower shadows than with a bare flash. It also has a slot at its base where you can insert one of the supplied gels if you want to add colour to the light.

Meanwhile, the MagBounce looks like a floppy ship’s funnel and is designed to be used on a flashgun that’s pointing directly upwards. It’s used instead of bouncing light off a ceiling and it throws the light forward. It increases the spread of the light but as it’s closer to the light than a ceiling, there’s much less light loss. It also puts an end to worrying about the colour of the ceiling, so it’s altogether very handy.
