1 EX­TEND THE CAN­VAS

start by du­pli­cat­ing the back­ground layer, then us­ing the Crop tool drag out the can­vas to the new di­men­sions. add space. Once con­firmed, the crop area will fill with ei­ther trans­parency or a colour de­fined by the fore and back­ground colours.

2 SE­LECT AND FILL

use the Magic Wand tool (W) to se­lect the sur­round­ing space. Leave edges un­feath­ered. then use Con­tent aware Fill to add image con­tent sourced from nearby tex­tures. try reap­ply­ing the fill if un­usual re­peat­ing pat­terns oc­cur, as this will force Pho­to­shop to an­a­lyse sam­pling.

3 RETOUCH AND RECROP

use the Clone stamp tool (s) or an­other re­touch­ing tool to re­pair ob­vi­ous seams and cover re­peat­ing de­tail. then use the Crop tool to ad­just the com­po­si­tion to taste, main­tain­ing the com­mon ‘rules’ such as the rule of thirds. use the grid to judge pro­por­tions.
