1 EXTEND THE CANVAS
start by duplicating the background layer, then using the Crop tool drag out the canvas to the new dimensions. add space. Once confirmed, the crop area will fill with either transparency or a colour defined by the fore and background colours.
2 SELECT AND FILL
use the Magic Wand tool (W) to select the surrounding space. Leave edges unfeathered. then use Content aware Fill to add image content sourced from nearby textures. try reapplying the fill if unusual repeating patterns occur, as this will force Photoshop to analyse sampling.
3 RETOUCH AND RECROP
use the Clone stamp tool (s) or another retouching tool to repair obvious seams and cover repeating detail. then use the Crop tool to adjust the composition to taste, maintaining the common ‘rules’ such as the rule of thirds. use the grid to judge proportions.
