Chinese manufacturer H&Y has come up with a great way to speed up using rectangular and square filters by adding magnetic strips. The Magnetic Filter Frames are available in a range of sizes to fit filters from companies such as Lee Filters and Formatt-Hitech. These come in four sections that stick and clip together around the filter. Then it’s just a case of removing the filter slots on your existing filter holder and replacing them with the screw-on Filter Holder Adapter Strips or using an H&Y holder ($229).

We used the system with a Lee Filters kit. It was a little fiddly to get the frames clipped on the filters correctly, but once done, it’s very easy to change filters and slip the graduations to the correct point. You can even stack the filters, so it’s possible to combine a Big Stopper for a long exposure and an ND Grad to balance the exposure.
