HOW TO LIGHT VIDEOS

Master a three-light setup for indoor interviews

Digital Photograper - - Video Skills -

1 POSITION YOUR SUBJECT

Ask your subject to sit down and frame up the shot for your footage first. You’ll be positioning three continuous light sources (these could be LEDs).

2 TURN ON KEY LIGHT

Position the main light, the brightest of the three you are using, behind the camera and facing your subject, above their eye level.

3 ADD FILL LIGHT

Position a light to the side of your subject at a 45-degree angle, to fill in shadows on their face. Set the intensity to around half that of the key light.

4 ADD BACK LIGHT

Position another light behind your subject out of shot, outlining their head and creating separation between them and the background.

5 CHECK THE VIEW

Use Live View to check the lighting effect. Tweak the white balance, angle and position of lights, and ratio of power between the three lights.

6 ADD ACCESSORIES

To modify the setup before you start rolling the camera, you could add in a reflector or diffuser, or attach coloured gels over the light sources.
