SHOOTING STEPS
LENS SELECTION As you will be focusing on something that will undoubtedly be quite detailed or feature jewellery, you will want to capitalise on this by using a lens that will achieve great depth of field and allow extreme close-ups, so a macro lens is the best choice.
POSITION THE RING This will possibly be the trickiest part of the project, as you will need to try and keep the ring upright while simultaneously keeping it pinched by the pages to make them bulge upward – this will be what creates the shape of the shadow in your images.
POWER UP! As you are going to want to form a hard shadow, you will need a direct light source behind the ring. You will need to adjust your flash power accordingly, however, depending on your aperture. You may need a few attempts to get the balance right, so be patient.
SET YOUR APERTURE This shot is all about the shadow, and using a bare flash will make shadows form regardless. However, you will want to force attention to the ring, so set a sensible aperture to make sure that the shadow softens slightly, but keeps the ring sharp.
SYNC AND POSITION YOUR FLASHES Make sure that the flash system/remote trigger set is synced. Once synced, position the units behind the rings so that the shadow formed will be distorted by the bulbous-ness of the pages.
CHOOSE YOUR ANGLE When it comes to taking the shot, you can either set up for a rigid straight-on shot and use a tripod, or you can go hands-free and work different angles for a dynamic look.
