Sigma has announced that its new 70-200mm f2.8 DG OS

HSM Sports lens will have a suggested retail price of £1,350. The

Sigma SA-mount and Canon EFmount versions are set to go on sale in December 2018 and the Nikon F-mount will be available in early 2019.

Aimed at professional photographers shooting news, sports, portraits and landscapes, the new lens is constructed from 24 elements in 22 groups, incorporating ten exclusive low-dispersion glass elements. Its barrel is also constructed from magnesium alloy to keep weight down while ensuring a robust build, and the 11-blade diaphragm creates a rounded aperture for attractive bokeh. Like other lenses in the company’s Sports line, the new 70-200mm lens is dust and splash-proof while the front element has a water and oilrepellent coating. Combined with the provided petal-shaped lens hood, the coating should help keep raindrops at bay.

The lens also incorporates Sigma’s Intelligent OS (Optical Stabiliser) with an acceleration sensor and a new algorithm helping it to cope with panning in all directions. In addition, the Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) has an updated algorithm to speed focus acquisition and the closest focusing distance is 120cm, which gives a maximum magnification of 1:4.8.

The lens is compatible with Sigma’s USB Dock which, as well as facilitating firmware upgrades, enables the AF Function button to be customised to suit the subject or shooting situation. The magnesium alloy tripod foot is also Arca-Swiss compatible for easy tripod mounting and has 90-degree click stops for swift orientation switching.

The new lens is compatible with Sigma’s MC-11 mount adapter for Sony E-mount cameras as well as the company’s current

1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters. On a full-frame camera the angle of view is 34.3-12.3 degrees.

The addition of the 70-200mm f2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens to Sigma’s range means the company now has focal lengths from 14mm to 200mm covered by maximum-performance fixed-aperture f2.8 optics.
