LandscapePro offers a quick and easy way to edit landscape images with help from AI
A roundup of products for photographers to consider
Although we’d all love to have the time and freedom to photograph landscapes in the ideal weather and light, it’s just not possible for many of us. LandscapePro is a standalone and Photoshop plug-in software package that’s designed to help less-than-perfect images look just right by changing the sky or the atmosphere.
It’s best to get the main subject of your image looking more or less as you want it before opening it in LandscapePro. With this in mind, the Studio (£50/$65) or Studio
Max (£100/$130) editions make the best buy, as they can actually operate as a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. As usual with a plug-in, LandscapePro is accessed via the Filter menu in Photoshop, and it needs to be registered as an External Editor in Lightroom.
Once LandscapePro is open, the first step in using it is to drag labels from the palette on the left onto the relevant parts of your image. Pop the Sky label on the sky, the Tree label on any trees and Grass on grass etc. This creates the basic masks. LandscapePro now uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist with subject detection, and it does a pretty good job. However, there are a selection of brush tools for tweaking the masks if necessary. You don’t need to be especially accurate, and you can always hop back to edit the masks if you find you need to later.
With your masks created, the next step is to edit them. The sky editing is one of the most powerful and useful features. LandscapePro has a selection of preset skies that you can apply to your image, but you can also upload your own to use. Each mask has its own set of tools to make the edits so that you can tailor every part of your image to suit your vision. However, we find that our images tend to benefit from some additional editing in Photoshop or Lightroom to ensure we get exactly what we are looking for.
