SHIMODA EXPLORE 30L BACKPACK
Combine this backpack with a Shimoda Core Unit for a versatile camera bag
The Shimoda Explore 30L is designed to hold any of the Shimoda Core Units that can also be used in the larger Explore 40L and 60L backpacks. These Core Units start at £50/$50 and allow you to configure the storage space to suit your gear. We used the Explore 30L with the Medium Mirrorless Core Unit, which is able to hold a small full-frame mirrorless camera like the Sony a7 III with a 70-200mm f2.8 mounted, plus two or three other lenses and accessories.
Shimoda has used a water-resistant nylon fabric with a double-sided carbonate ether PU coating to construct the backpack around a metal frame. It makes the backpack feel durable yet lightweight, but the fabric is a little reminiscent of those sweaty cagoules of yesteryear. However, it’s also tough and sheds raindrops.
The Explore 30L has side and rear-panel access, but the rear access is the more logical option to use with the Medium Mirrorless Core installed. The harness itself has a few pockets so you can carry a water bottle and your phone within easy reach. There’s even a small pocket that’s ideal for stashing tissues or rubbish.
A zip on the left side (as you wear the pack) opens to reveal a side pouch with a drawstring closure. This is a convenient place to attach a tripod and the side straps are useful for stopping it waving around in transit.
Shimoda has given the backpack a very comfortable back section, which also houses a sleeve to hold a 13-inch laptop. In addition, there’s a long pocket down the front of the backpack and a spacious top one with a few organiser pockets for everyday essentials.
One of our favourite features of the Shimoda Explore 30L backpack is its adjustable harness, which helps make the pack comfortable for photographers of different heights. The harness straps are also wide and curvaceous, plus the waist belt is removable and there’s an optional Belt Booster for those with a larger frame. It adds up to make your load as comfortable as possible.
