Canon adds a second full-frame camera to its mirrorless range
Just five months after announcing the EOS R, Canon has introduced its second full-frame mirrorless system camera, the EOS RP, aimed at photographers looking to step up to full-frame photography for the first time.
At 132.5 x 85.0 x 70.0mm and 485g with the battery and memory card, the EOS RP is Canon’s smallest, lightest full-frame digital interchangeable lens camera to date. And at £1,400/$1,299 body only (with the EF-EOS R Mount Adapter in the UK), it’s also the cheapest at launch.
Rather than the 30MP sensor of the EOS R, the RP has a 26.2MP CMOS chip that’s paired with Canon’s DIGIC 8 processing engine. These combine to enable a sensitivity range of ISO 100-40,000, which is expandable to ISO 50-102,400. There’s also a maximum shooting rate of five frames per second that can be maintained for 50 RAW files or until the SD card in the single UHS-II port is full with JPEGs. The rate drops to 4fps with continuous focusing.
Focusing is taken care of by the Dual
Pixel CMOS AF system, which is claimed to have the world’s fastest AF speed of 0.05 seconds and operate at down to -5EV. There are 4,779 selectable ‘AF positions’ that cover up to 88 per cent of the image frame.
Canon has opted for a 0.39-type OLED
2.36 million-dot electronic viewfinder, along with Touch and Drag AF to enable the AF point to be set via the touchscreen while using the viewfinder. Eye AF is also available with continuous tracking in Face Detect mode. Additionally, focus bracketing enables a sequence of images to be shot with the focus automatically adjusted between each image. Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software can then be used to combine the images into one that has the desired depth of field.
The EOS RP is capable of capturing RAW files in CR3 14-bit format as well as the smaller compact RAW format that saves approximately 40 per cent disk space.
In addition, there’s Canon’s Dual Sensing IS system, a silent shooting scene mode and both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.
