CANON EOS RA AIMS FOR THE STARS
New night-sky camera officially announced – after a leaky start
The Canon EOS Ra – the dedicated astrophotography version of its flagship mirrorless camera – was recently leaked in a series of online images, and then unofficially confirmed by a pre‑order listing on camera shop Adorama. The official Canon release soon followed, however, listing all the starry tech specs that you’d expect for a mirrorless designed for astrophotography.
Rumours of the Canon EOS Ra first appeared in June, shortly after it was coincidentally revealed that the company had patented a Moon Shooting mode. Canon itself then leaked the camera by mistake in September, when it accidentally published the EOS Ra instruction manual on its UK website.
The EOS Ra is the manufacturer’s first dedicated astrophotography camera since 2010, which saw the release of the EOS 60Da, while the company’s first ever astro cam was the EOS 20Da in 2005. It is also their first full‑frame star shooter and first mirrorless one. Features include a new IR filter array in front of the sensor, which allows four times as much hydrogen‑ alpha light to be transmitted as the normal EOS R.
