5 KEY TRENDS FOR 2020
1 DSLRS CONTINUING TO DIE Many prematurely predicted the death of DSLRs in 2019, but cameras like the Canon EOS 90D gallantly fought back. However, in 2020 the trend is only going to escalate – and we’ll see how wise Canon and Nikon were to stick with pro cameras with mirrors inside.
2 60 WILL BE THE NEW 50 Not that long ago, the Canon EOS 5DS R was easily the highest resolution 35mm equivalent camera, with its 50MP sensor. Now, 47MP cameras are a dime a dozen, and the Sony A7R IV has already hit 60MP – and rumours are that Canon’s next EOS R will top 70MP.
3 MAINSTREAM MEDIUM FORMAT Okay, £57,000 for the Phase One XT – and even £10,000 for the Fujifilm GFX 100 – aren’t everyman prices. However, Hasselblad and Fujifilm’s mirrorless medium-format cameras are more affordable than ever; expect to see more and more consumers adopting the format.
4 MORE BOUTIQUE LENSES Once upon a time, a macro lens was about as exotic as things got. Now, though, Nikon and Fujifilm are releasing f/0.95 and f/1.0 lenses, and Canon is producing specialist glass like its Defocus Smoothing optic. And Canon has told us that it has more specialist plans in store.
5 PHONES WILL OVERPOWER CAMERAS Not just in terms of sales (that already happened a while ago) but in sheer specs. December saw the world’s first 108MP smartphone – yes, the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 has more megapixels than the Fujifilm GFX 100 – and 2020 will see an avalanche of 48MP and 64MP handsets.
