Canon continues to tease the EOS R5 with industry-leading video specs
Keep up to date with the latest insider announcements from the imaging industry
The latest Canon EOS R5 press release revealed that the camera possesses “cinema industry-standard” specs and “will shoot comfortably on highend production sets” such as commercials, dramas, and documentaries. The video specs from the full-frame mirrorless are certainly dizzying – 8K RAW uncropped, internal recording up to 29.97fps, and 4K uncropped internal recording up to 119.88fps.
There’s also 5-axis optical IBIS, enabling
Lens IS and camera IBIS to be combined.
“With its ability to record in cinema industrystandard formats and codecs, the EOS R5 is an ideal lead camera for many productions,” according to Canon.
Key stills features include advanced animal AF, plus 12fps shooting performance using the mechanical shutter, and 20fps with the electronic shutter.
While the Canon EOS R5’s sensor resolution still hasn’t been revealed (at the time of going to press), another mystery has been solved: its memory format. The R5 has dual memory card slots, for a SD UHS-II and CFexpress card.
In terms of specs, the EOS R5 significantly out-muscles everything else on the market currently, including the powerhouse Panasonic S1H – a camera so capable that it is certified by Netflix as a broadcast camera.
However, as a consumer-level model, a core complaint from some photographers is the feeling they’re paying extra for video functions they don’t want. We don’t yet know pricing for the EOS R5, but there’s no doubt it’s going to be a game-changer in the mirrorless market.
With the R5 expected to be released in May, could we also see an announcement of the R6? Some of the rumoured specs for the EOS R6 include a 20MP full-frame CMOS sensor, IBIS, 12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic, 4K at 60p, and dual card slots.
