DREAMY HARE WINS GDT NATURE PHOTO CONTEST

Contest by the Society for Nature Photography (GDT) announces top shots

-

The German Society for Nature Photography (GDT) has named Peter Lindel as its Nature Photographer of the Year with his photo of a European hare. Peter came out on top with this shot A hare’s dream in a field of 307 GDT members from 11 countries and over 5,000 entries. For the first time ever this year, voting was completed by GDT members online, due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Peter spent a lot of time and blood, sweat, and tears working on this project on his doorstep,” says the GDT. “In these times, as everyone is urged to stay home, the generally classic subject of a hare gains special significance.” The image is also a beautiful statement for the long-term photographic exploration of a single species and region.

Peter particularly wanted to capture the European hare, as it has become a rarer sight across the open country of Germany. “The large number of hares that I used to spot every morning on my way to work in the fields and meadows north of Dortmund prompted me 12 years ago to explore this area with my camera. It has now become increasingly timeconsuming to find hares and present them in an appealing photograph.

“A hare’s dream was taken in July 2019 when months of searching for a suitable location led me to a dirt road and offered the most beautiful morning light and lovely vegetation,” he explained.

Members also chose their favourite images in seven other categories: Birds, Mammals, Other Animals, Plants & Fungi, Landscapes, Nature’s Studio, and a special category, Water. See the winners at: WWW.GDTFOTO.DE
