BUYING: COMPACT SYSTEM CAMERA CANON EOS M5

My Canon 5D Mk IV and Sigma f/2.8 zoom lenses are heavy for everyday shooting. What would be a good supplement, lightweight kit?

- Jason Roberts

I know exactly what you mean. A high-quality SLR with ‘trinity’ lenses like Sigma’s 14-24mm, 24-70mm, and 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms is capable of spectacular performance, but you can end up with a 10kg backpack of camera gear to lug around.

For a comparatively small, lightweight option for daily use, I’m a fan of the Canon EOS M5. It’s not the most recent model on the market but is available to buy new if you shop around, and also makes a good second-hand purchase.

Unlike the newer M6, the M5 has a built-in viewfinder and feels more natural if you’re used to shooting with an SLR. A good trio of lenses would be the EF-M 1545mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM standard zoom, the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM wide-angle zoom, and the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM telephoto zoom. To put things in perspective, the camera body plus all three lenses weigh about the same as the Sigma 24-70mm lens on its own, with no camera body attached. And if you buy an additional EF-EOS M-mount adapter, you can also use your existing Canon-mount SLR lenses, should you feel the need.
