PERFECT PORTRAITS

Know the tricks to capture stunning portraits every time

For most couples, the idea of having their photo taken is enough to make them want to run and hide, so making sure that your time spent with them is as fun and relaxed as possible will make all of the difference. Remember that it’s unlikely your couple have ever had their photo taken by a professional before, so before you become too snap-happy, chat to them and ease their nerves.

Start off slow with something less invasive – sticking a camera right in their face isn’t going to get the best results. Instead, try asking them to do something simple, like walking hand in hand while chatting to one another; this is something they probably do in everyday life and should make them forget they’re even having their photograph taken. Once they’ve eased into the shoot, then you can move on to more ‘posey’ shots.

Remember that your couple don’t have to look at the camera for every single photo. In fact, it’s often the shots where they’re looking away from the camera or at each other that feel much more authentic and natural. Staring down the barrel of a camera can be daunting, so avoid asking them to do this unless you feel they’re confident to do so, or it’s absolutely necessary to get the shot you want.

The best way to invoke natural smiles is to keep the conversation flowing. So, while you’re busy snapping away, don’t forget to keep chatting to them. Where necessary you can give them loose instructions on where to look or place their hands, but then try and revert back to some light-hearted conversation to ensure the mood isn’t lowered. Asking them about their honeymoon plans is almost guaranteed to bring out a smile or two.

You don’t have to pose your couple in overly dramatic positions to capture great shots. Simple poses, like asking them to come together for a tight embrace, or standing face to face, is often all that is needed, so don’t overcomplicate things with awkward poses.
