Fujinon GF 23MM F/4 R LM WR
Get the most out of medium format with this quality wide prime for Fujifilm GFX
BUILD AND HANDLING
As with all medium-format optics, this one has a significant diameter to accommodate the wider image circle. However, it’s not overly heavy and cumbersome, unlike similar lenses from past decades. The barrel feels wellconstructed, and the user can be confident that it will withstand a few knocks and scrapes in the field. The focus ring is well-placed and operates smoothly, enabling precise manual focusing, while the textured surface makes it easy to get a good grip.
PERFORMANCE
Despite there being quite a lot of glass, the AF motor does a good job of moving it quickly and smoothly. It’s also fairly quiet thanks to the linear motor, and the operation feels in line with X-Series lenses – an impressive feat.
In terms of image quality, the optics really don’t disappoint. At maximum aperture, detail is superb from edge to edge, with things improving up to around f/11 and remaining fairly consistent up to f/16. This is especially important for a medium-format lens due to the reduced depth of field. Even at the edges of the frame there is negligible chromatic aberration, and barrel distortion is minimal but sometimes noticeable. Wide open, the bokeh has an appealing structure. Colour is accurate, and contrast is dramatic yet natural.
VERDICT
Any owner of the Fujifilm GFX system should have this lens on their wishlist. It has a perfect balance of specs and size/weight, while offering exceptional wide-angle images for landscapes and architectural imagery.
