The ‘new Olympus’, OM Digital Solutions, remains committed to Micro 4/3
OM Digital Solutions, formerly Olympus Imaging, has teased a new line of Micro 4/3 compatible cameras in a broadcast marking Micro
Four Thirds Day – 4 April. Product strategist Eiji Shirota, who was the former planning manager at Olympus Imaging, said on the livestream that “We are developing a new product firmly. You can expect it,” suggesting that new cameras are into the design phase and could be announced in the foreseeable future.
Interestingly the broadcast also shed some light on the focus of the rebranded camera manufacturer, which seems to be firmly on the Micro 4/3 sensor format. When quizzed about the possibility of full-frame Olympus cameras making an appearance, Eiji Shirota made it clear that “we are on the path of Micro Four Thirds” and “we do not do full size”.
This comes after weeks of speculation that OM Digital Solutions might join the L-Mount Alliance, a consortium of camera brands using the full-frame sensor format and currently incorporating Panasonic, Sigma and Leica. The Panasonic connection in particular made this move credible due to the strong cooperation between Olympus and Panasonic with the Micro 4/3 mount.
OM Digital has also unveiled a brand new Micro Four Thirds website, further demonstrating the intent of the company to stick with what Olympus has done well for many years. You can take a look at the new site at WWW.FOUR-THIRDS.ORG/EN and find the right camera/lens for your needs.
