APPLE IPHONE 12 PRO MAX

With plenty of advanced photography technology, this is a great phone for photographers

Apple’s iPhone has probably done the most to transform our perception of what smartphone cameras are capable of, but the brand hasn’t taken its foot off the gas. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is Apple’s flagship smartphone and while it might at first glance appear to share the same suite of cameras as the 12 Pro, that’s not the case, as the larger size has allowed Apple to squeeze in larger imaging sensors. This sees the 12 Pro Max feature a primary 26mm f/1.6 lens married to a 12MP sensor (with 1.7µmm pixels) that’s complemented by an ultra-wide 13mm f/2.4 lens and a 65mm f/2 moderate telephoto lens, both with 12MP sensor (though with a pixel pitch smaller than the primary camera). It does lack the extra long telephoto lens that the Galaxy S21 Ultra enjoys, however.

It might lack some of the headline features of rivals, but the iPhone 12

Pro Max doesn’t disappoint when it comes to image quality, especially from the primary camera. Colours are nice and neutral, while under indoor light images have a welcoming warmth to them. Image noise is also handled very well.

To make the iPhone 12 Pro Max even more versatile and allow for some impressive low-light shooting credentials, Apple has equipped the primary camera with sensor shift technology along with optical image stabilisation, As well as this, a LiDAR scanner has also been introduced, helping to speed up focusing in low-light situations. This makes the camera that bit more usable in low light over its rivals, while

Night Mode is a fantastic tool for creative shooting in poor light. For those who want to get the most from the camera, they can use Apple’s ProRAW file format – it means users can shoot with Apple’s clever computational effects, but edit them in

Lightroom (or similar).
