Sigma 24-70MM F/2.8 DG OS HSM A
Sigma is aiming to become a major force in the professional lens market. Can this 24-70mm be a true Canon and Nikon beater?
BUILD AND HANDLING
Sigma’s high-end lenses have been credible alternatives to the proprietary offerings from the camera manufacturers for years, but now the firm is upping its quality game even further. The 24-70mm is a critical standard lens for pros and the build quality of the 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM A is every bit professional. While it lacks some of the weather sealing of its competitors, it feels solid and tailored for withstanding tough environments, with a rugged brass mount. The control rings are easy to grip and have just enough tension. The lens does extend when zoomed, which isn’t ideal, but is less unusual with pro optics these days. The downside of the build and high grade glass is weight – this isn’t a lightweight lens. However it’s far shorter than the Canon and Nikon equivalents.
PERFORMANCE
The A designation indicates this is one of Sigma’s Art series pro lenses and the optics support this. The SLD glass does its job well and chromatic aberration is excellently controlled. It is present but inoffensive and easily removed. Centre sharpness is superb at all apertures, especially at around f/5.6-f/8, while edge detail is acceptable. Bokeh is lovely and distortion is far from problematic.
VERDICT
With its tough construction, excellent image stabiliser, fast AF, beautiful bokeh and superior sharpness, contrast and distortion, this Sigma lens is more than a match for the competition. Based on value for money it is arguably a must-have for Canon and Nikon users.

HANDHELD PERFORMER
When light levels fall the OS (Optical Stabilizer) is highly effective at reducing camera shake. Combined with the constant f/2.8 aperture the lens is a low light workhorse
